I personally prefer making Hand Rolls at home. They are very easy to make and also very yummy. Hand Rolls are the perfect rolls for a party. You can toss different fillings and guests can assemble them based on their preference. Make a platter of vegetables, Nori and Sushi Rice. Let the guests make their own rolls.
How to make Hand Roll Sushi
Hand Roll Sushi can be made with a variety of ingredients. You have got a wide range of options to choose from. It depends on your personal liking. There is a wide variety of seafood you can choose from. I personally like to use Rice, any sea food and 2 to 3 vegetables wrapped in Nori. It is just like prepping Ingredients for a hotpot. Hand Rolls are easiest to make at home. I use the following ingredients as filling of my Hand Rolls:
Sushi grade salmon or Tuna | 1 lb |
Seaweed Sheets | 10 |
Avocado | 2 |
Cucumber | 2 |
Radish Sprouts | 2 |
Shiso leaves | 1 cup |
Cooked Sushi Rice | 4 cups |
Rice Vinegar | 2 tsp |
Sugar | ¼ tsp |
Salt | ¼ tsp |
Condiments:
Soy Sauce |
Wasabi |
Gari (pickled Ginger) |
Spicy Mayo( for recipe, click here) |
Sriracha |
Tools:
- Rice Cooker
- Platter dish
- Knife
Instructions:
Step 1:
Prepare Sushi rice. For this you need to wash and cook Short grain Rice. Don’t make your Rice very sticky. Then season Rice with Vinegar, sugar and Salt according to your taste preference.
Step 2:
Cut salmon in thin slices. Make tuna filling by mixing Mayo and Sriracha.
Step 3:
Wash the vegetables. Peel and cut them in thin slices.
Step 4:
Place all your ingredients on a platter dish.
Step 5:
Next step is to take roasted Seaweed sheets. Cut the sheet in half. Remember to put shiny side down.
Step 6:
Place a thin layer of rice on Sea weed. Next put Salmon or Tuna filling. Next add the vegetables of your preference and tada you are done.
Step 7:

Tips to Make Perfect Hand rolls:
- To have crispy rolls use good quality Sea weed. Place its shiny side down.
- To avoid any bacteria that might be on fish, Add some wasabi on top of your sea food.
- To avoid Soggy Rolls, Keep the Nori dry. You don’t want it to become Soggy. Eat it as soon as you roll it. Hand Rolls are better if eaten fresh.
- To have the perfect shape, be gentle with it. Don’t squeeze your Roll.
- To seal it perefectly, put some grains of rice aside. And seal the open flap using those grains.
