Well when we listen the name Sushi, what comes in our mind is the traditional Sushi wrapped in Nori. But now various versions of Sushi are available. If you are not a fan of traditional Sushi, you can try Sushi with Rice on the outside.
Not only does it taste great, Sushi at home is also very reasonable. And you don’t need to be an expert to try this recipe. Everyone can make it perfectly with my super easy recipe.
So lets start.
Sushi with Rice on the Outside: Uramaki Rolls
What sets rice-on-the-outside sushi apart is not just its unconventional appearance but also the meticulous craftsmanship required to create it. Sushi with rice on the outside also called Inside out rolls are my favourite. I saw my mom making them perfectly. And i learnt the recipe from her.
Now my family enjoys it as much as i do.
Ingredients for Inside Out Rolls
Inside out Rolls also called Uramaki Rolls are very versatile. We can make them using different fillings. I am using Spicy tuna as a filling. Lets delve in to the ingredients required for our Uramaki rolls:

Sushi grade Tuna | 1/2 lb |
Mayonaisse | 2 Tbsp |
Sriracha Sauce | 1 Tbsp |
Sesame Oil | 1 tsp |
Soy Sauce | 1 tsp |
Sugar | 1/2 tsp |
Salt | according to taste |
Sesame seeds | half cup |
Cucumber thinly sliced | 2 |
Equipment
- Bamboo mat
- Plastic Cling
- Sharp Knife
Instructions
1. Prepare the Sushi Rice. Always use short grain Japanese Rice. Season them with vinegar, sugar and salt. You can check my recipe.
2. For spicy tuna, dice the sushi-grade tuna into small cubes.
3. In a bowl, combine the diced tuna with mayonnaise, Sriracha sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mix well until the tuna is evenly coated with the spicy mayonnaise mixture. Adjust the amount of Sriracha sauce according to your desired level of spiciness.
4. To assemble the Uramaki Rolls, Place a sheet of nori shiny side down.
5. Moisten your hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking, then take a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a small border along the top edge.
6. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of toasted black and white sesame seeds over the rice if desired.
7. Place a rolling mat covered with plastic cling over Rice.
8. Flip the nori over so that the rice is facing down on the rolling mat.
9. Take spicy tuna and place it carefully on Nori.levae 2 inch border at the bottom.
10. Place thinly sliced cucumber on rice.
11. Start rolling the sushi using the bamboo mat, tucking the fillings in tightly. Apply gentle pressure as you roll to ensure the sushi holds its shape.
12. Now cover the roll with plastic wrap.
13. With a sharp knife, moistened with water, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces.
14. Take off the plastic wrap from sushi rolls. Your inside out Sushi rolls are ready.

- Wrap your bamboo mat in plastic wrap. It prevents the rice from sticking to the mat.
- Always moisten your hands before dealing with rice.
