When I first tried Volcano Rolls at a Restaurant, I fell in love instantly with them. I wanted to try the recipe at home. Because eating Sushi at a restaurant is expensive.

After trying 2 to 3 variations, I have now crafted the perfect recipe for Volcano Rolls.

What is Volcano Roll?

The volcano roll is a famous sushi roll known for its dynamic flavours, spicy kick, and visually striking presentation.

Volcano Rolls are full of flavorful ingredients like crab meat, shrimp, crunchy vegetables, spicy mayo and baked to perfection. Volcano Rolls are served warm.

Volcano Roll Sushi Ingredients

The ingredients used in Volcano Rolls are as follows:

Nori Seaweed4 sheets
Crab imitation sticks4 oz
Cucumber 1
Cream Cheese
Sushi Rice 2 cups cooked
Blanched Shrimp1/4 cup
Salt & Pepper to taste
Spicy Mayo ¼ cup
Finely Chopped white onion 1 tbsp
Finely Chopped Green Onions Greens1Tbsp

Tools Needed for Volcano Rolls

  • Bamboo mat
  • Instant pot or Rice cooker
  • Plastic wrap
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking tray
  • Sharp Knife

Instructions

  • Cut Nori in half. Place it with a shiny side down on a bamboo mat covered in Plastic Wrap.
  • Place a thin layer of cooled Sushi Rice on the sheet. You can use my recipe for Sushi Rice. Wet your hands and spread them evenly on the sheet. Don’t cover the whole sheet. Keep the edges empty. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds.
  • Shred the crab imitation sticks in pieces. Mix with Japanese mayonnaise and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Next, flip the Nori. This step is tricky. Practice will make you perfect.
  • Place thin slices of cucumber and cream cheese in the centre. Then, add the crab mixture.
  • Now start folding the sushi Roll. Fold the ingredients tightly. Press your fingers around the Roll using a bamboo mat.
  • When done, take a sharp knife. Wet it and cut your Roll into eight equal pieces.

For the Volcano Topping:

  • Blanch the deveined shrimp with pinch of salt and sugar and cut in small pieces.
  • Shred 3 crab imitation sticks into small pieces.
  • Take 1 tbsp of cream cheese, spicy mayo, onion and green onion in a bowl. Mix with shredded crabs and blanched shrimps. If you dont know how to make spicy mayo, click here.
  • Take a baking tray and put parchment paper on it.
  • Put your rolls on the tray. Spoon the mixture and spread on your rolls.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 Fahrenheit. Bake the sushi rolls with topping in the oven for 15 minutes or until the shrimp is cooked.
  • Your yummy, crunchy volcano rolls are ready to be served.

Expert tips

  • Mix ¼ cup water with 2 tsp of rice vinegar to wet your hands. Wet your hands in this mixture. That will add flavour to your Rolls.
  • Wet your knife with water to cut rolls smoothly.
  • Covering the bamboo mat with plastic wrap prevents rice from sticking to the mat. It will also save you time from cleaning the mat.
  • If you are using raw seafood in Rolls, eating fresh is better. Also rice can become dry if frozen. So dont freeze.
